To be honest, I'm not really sure why the whole Kaltura framework is designed to work with 4:3 footage. Surely all video content in the future will be 16:9. I'd much rather watch 4:3 footage with bars on either side, than shrunk 16:9 footage letter-boxed...

Any chance of building a 16:9 version of the KAE?

In general the whole roughcut (remix) mechanism was designed for letter-box.
However, in the not so far future (matter of few weeks) a new version is planned for the kdp and kae that will support entries of any size and ratio and that way if your remix is assembled of videos with letter-box, 16:9, 16:10, and etc. the original ratios will be maintained for every single entry in the remix.

bottom-line - you can expect it to be available in the very near future

Will this update be backwards compatible?

For example, if I upload all my footage as 16:9, and edit it using the current KAE, will it work in the new KAE and KDP as native 16:9?

As all the footage I want to use for this particular campaign is 16:9, this new update will work great for my site - however, it's going to be a few weeks, and I need to recode a lot of things because the editor and player is a different size, etc. then this is going to be a bit of a pain unless it's backwards compatible and I can just change the Flash URL.

yes, this should also be backward compatible.

Well it's been a few weeks now... Any news on the new KAE?

I just realised that the current KAE doesn't handle 16:9 material very well at all! It squeezes 16:9 content into 4:3. I just assumed it would letterbox it.

As all my content is 16:9, this is a bit of a problem...

Any workaround?

Although I'm not an expert in Kaltura, but I think this is more of a media conversion problem rather than a specific Kaltura module problem... most likely the backend server conversion has been set to the 4:3 conversion mentioned. Just my two cents though

No, it's not a media conversion problem. I'm doing all the FLV encoding myself.

The media plays fine in 16:9 on the KDP - it just gets "squished" when played on the editors...

I guess I'll just have to wait either for a 16:9 editor, or an update to the KAE that supports letterboxing of 16:9 content...

Thanks anyway!

I have issued a bug report. Please vote for it as I'd love to see this fixed as soon as possible!

Hi Chris,

Please note that various aspect-ratios support was added on a later version.
Please use the latest - version 1.0.15.26975 (http://www.kaltura.com/kae/ui_conf_id/1000865).

Fantastic! You're a champion! Thanks!

It would be great if you could have somewhere on the website that has the UIConf ID's for all the latest versions of everything. Obviously we won't need these once you can customise the editors in the KMC - but until then...

Ahhh.... close, but not quite!

Even on version 1.0.15.26975, when you preview a clip - the aspect ratio is wrong.

The aspect ratio on the timeline however is right...

Bug report here.

This may have something to do with it...

UIConf ID 1000865 is actually build 1.0.15.29762.
