Adding and selecting annotations in player

For a research project involving a video archive, I am looking for open-source software to annotate videos.
Kaltura says it lets you 'edit and annotate' videos. However, this seems to be limited to the 'text overlay' function in the Advanced Editor.
Are there ways to add time-based annotations to videos more quickly?
Would it be possible to save this kind of information in a separate file, much like subtitles, and select it from the player?
If anyone else is interested in Kaltura-based annotation, I would love to know.

What use case/content type did you have in mind for the annotations?
KDP has a plugin for subtitles/ captioning/transcriptions.

Thanks for your interest!
The annotation is part of a group analysis of a large video archive of dance.
Our goal is to be able to jump around the video moving from annotation to annotation. The content type would be text comments, as can be found on Viddler - http://www.viddler.com/explore/carlypaigemusic/videos/1/ - for example.
A scenario of use could be:
Seven students are observing the choreographic work and collaboratively code features of the dance. They post their longer comments and questions tied to specific intervals on the video.

We appreciate the power and elegance of Kaltura and would love to use it in this project.
Can you tell me please is anyone working on annotation?

I'm in the same boat timwoe. Viddler's commenting is pretty robust. How can I integrate that into KDP? Where do I start? Is this a change in the XML or in the .as files?
