Description

currently there are some issues with shared hosting. ideally CE installation would be tested on various shared hosts and we would come up with better guidelines / code changes to support it.
this has came up originally in the forum here: http://kaltura.org/installation-fails-hosted-service

Bluehost:

1. Extracted to root, extraction created folder mydomain/kalturaCE
2. Copied crossdomain.xml to root
2. Installed without any error (except memcache warning)
3. All samples show black boxes but no video player (or errors)
4. Link to kmc (mydomain/kalturaCE/index.php/kmc) redirects back to mydomain/kalturaCE

That's as far as I've gotten.

http://arvixe.com/
and
http://www.bounceweb.com

1. mydomain/kalturaCE
2. Copied crossdomain.xml to root
3. Add in php.ini: enable_functions = exec, passthru
3. Install:
Can't to access to prepare_install.php page (loop, no error).
If you delete function verify_phpcli() in requirements.php you can pass to verification step.
Any error (except memcache warning).
Next in general_info.php to finish install it answer php exec path it say "can't find php executable path".

Can't continue installation.

Client Support say:
exec, passthru are already enabled by default as we specialize in media script hosting.
php-cli is already activated, and the path to it is: /usr/local/bin/php

Hi Randall,

Thanks for sharing about using HostUpon.com - would be really helpful if you can describe what hosting plan you used and the process you took to install KalturaCE on their shared hosting.

No luck on BlueHost - the community here is pretty thin where shared hosting is concerned, and these are the first responses I've gotten since I posted my initial request.

Hi Stephen,

As BlueHost's documents mention, BlueHost doesn't allow running ffmpeg or flvtools in their shared hosting environment.
Without running ffmpeg (or any other encoder), you're Kaltura stack can not perform the video conversions. That means you will only be able to use it for asset management for pre-encoded media file.

I'm in the process of setting up a dedicated ubuntu server with shared hosting capabilities for the sole purpose of allowing users to sign up and install KalturaCE in a shared environment.

My question for the readers of this is, what kind of capabilities would you be looking for as far as space/bandwith and how much do you think is a fair price for that?

Running the numbers right now, it looks like I could offer about 50gigs with 2000gb bandwidth/month for roughly $30 a month. Sound reasonable? Feel free to email me at webmaster [at] exseven [dot] com with any input. Thanks.

A site that I write for has the bandwidth problem and compromises have been made in order to lower the bandwidth, although I sometimes wonder whether that is not to the detriment of the site. Bandwidth can have subtly different meanings depending upon which side of the business you're viewing from, but in this case, it's the net amount of data throughput.what is cloud hosting
