Hi all ~
I've been evaluating Kaltura for a while now, and it looks really promising - except that I can't get it to work. :(
Here's my environment:
- Web server: Windows Server 2008; Apache 2.2.9; PHP 5.2.13; MySQL 5.0.67
- Joomla version: 1.5.17
- Kaltura CE installed on same server as Joomla
- Kaltura Video component version 1.01; configured to connect to local CE install (I think)
Here's my issue:
- When I go into an article in Joomla, and click the Add Video (Kaltura) button, it launches the Add Video pop-up window and allows me to make a selection and click Next. That's where I get the Add Video > Select Content pop-up with nothing but a title showing.
Here's what I've tried:
- changing the editor (JCE, TinyMCE, no editor)
- upgrading Joomla (I had the same problem with version 1.5.15)
- creating a menu link to the Kaltura component; exact same result only on front-end of site
I really hope someone can shed some light on this. I'm being pressured to identify a media solution for a major project (an entire college web site upgrade) and if I can't get this resolved this week, I may need to find another solution.
Thanks,
Nicole
Hi, Rey ~
Thanks for your response. I considered this workaround, but the trouble is that I have about 60 site editors and there's no way they're all getting directly into the Kaltura Management Console. ;)
I did quite a lot of research yesterday and discovered that according to http://www.kaltura.org/understanding-kaltura-open-source-video-online-pl..., Kaltura does have user support services. The trouble so far is that we don't have it set up. (I'm also not 100% sure the service is supported in the community edition.)
Anyway, thanks for taking a crack at it; we're going to try a re-install/re-configure of Kaltura. In truth, we're not 100% it's even configured correctly. (I am positive my Joomla sites are set up correctly.)
Thanks again!
Nicole
Kaltura seems to be the best answer for running a streaming media player on a Joomla site, although I am just a beginner (you call us newbies, but I don't even qualify for that title yet......). Anyway Kaltura certainly has the best user friendly demo, so that I can actually see how it works. I then followed the install instructions. It says 'sign up to Kaltura and get a partnerID'. What is a partnerID? I have registered a user name and password on the Kaltura site (otherwise I could not post this message!), but what next? Will somebody please help this poor old guy.......
Hi ~
Thanks for responding to my thread; I'm afraid I won't be of much help. (I'm a web developer, not a web server admin, so Kaltura set-up was not my gig.) You might check out http://www.kaltura.org/understanding-kaltura-open-source-video-online-pl... for a basic understanding though.
It sounds like you installed the Joomla component ok, but you need to tell it to talk to a Kaltura platform site, whether it be hosted of community edition. Take a look at http://www.kaltura.org/how-obtain-partner-identifiers and it should get you going in the right direction.
Good luck!
Nicole
Hi Rey,
I checked out your site with the workaround. I clicked KRUMP but I just got a 404 error:
404: Not Found Sorry, but the content you requested could not be found URI:/reynal/index.php/component/jomtube/video/3
Does it still work for others, or is the video removed from the site?
Christian
Hi Christian,
Thanks for your comments.
I would disregard this error. It is a problem I am having with Jomtube and NOT kaltura. This is the strength of kaltura--it operates well out of the box. This error is due mostly to my unfamiliarity with the configuration and set up parameters. I am working with my programmer on this but I recently made changes to my sections and categories that changed the errors.
I am turning off and on the kaltura portion of my site so it may not work when you look at it. This site is in the non-release development phase. Thanks.
I'm also evaluating the Kaltura CE/Joomla integration, and have found that there are some issues with the "Add Video" popup window. While I figured out what the problem was, I was still unable to successfully embed a movie in an article. That said, here's what I did to "resolve" this issue.
During the installation process, the Kaltura component creates a table in your Joomla database (in my case, `jos_kaltura_config`) containing IDs of SWFs that are supposed to be in your Kaltura database's `ui_conf` table. The problem is that the IDs for the "uploader_regular" and "uploader_mix" SWFs Joomla is trying to load don't exist in your instance of Kaltura. On top of that, the default IDs for CW_REGULAR_UICONF_ID and CW_MIX_UICONF_ID that are in the Joomla component's settings file (under "$JOOMLA_HOME/component/com_kalturavideo/client/kaltura_settings.php) don't exist either.
To fix this, you have to change the IDs in your `jos_kaltura_config` to match ones that already exist in `ui_conf`. In my case, I changed "uploader_regular" and "uploader_mix" to use 36202 (Contribution Wizard for KMC), and "player_regular_light" to use 530 (one of the Wordpress players).
With all this said, I was still unable to embed a movie in an article. Even after loading a movie and selecting a skin, the WYSIWYG editor in the article embeds the object as an image instead of a Flash object. I have no idea (or time to dig through the code) to figure out why this is happening. If anyone else wants to pick up where I left off, go for it. :-)
While I haven't tried integrating my Kaltura.com instance, I imagine the Add Video dialogue would work fine because it has knowledge of the Joomla players missing in Kaltura CE.
Great! Thanks! This sounds pretty promising.... I'll have to check it out on Monday, but I've had good luck before troubleshooting Joomla players/WYSIWYG issues. I'll report back as soon as I have results to share.
Thanks so much!
After:
1- Uploading
2) Naming and adding tags.... then you get to:
3) Where you pick "Light or Dark" and name the video. Well when selecting "OK' to end the process; it will not advance. You can Click the "ok"I tired it in: Chrome, Firefox and Safari (not IE though).
Does anyone know what is causing this or has anyone else experienced it?
LOOK AT THE SCREEN CAPTURE HERE:

I haven't been able to get this far personally.....
I have the same problem; get to a certain point in the process and screen basically dies.
Hi Nicole,
I haven't been able to see anything in the "My videos" option in that same window to input in my joomla articles. I have a work around that works fine; this is how I did it:
Inside Joomla go to Components>Kaltura Video
Log into the Kaltura Management Console (opens a new window)
In the Content tab select the "preview and embed" link of either a video or playlist
copy the embed HTML code.
Back in Joomla:
Components> Article Manager
Write text in the article (do not click the add video button THIS DOES NOT WORK as you well know).
CLICK THE HTML button on top (do not enter the HTML code in the main field window.
Paste the previously copied embed HTML code here.
Save and watch it work.
This method is probably not intended (who knows) but it worked for me. See it on my test server (up for only a couple of weeks) http://jdrhost.biz/reynal/
Hope this helps,
Rey
