Kaltura seems to be widely used and incorporated into popular open source projects like Word Press and Drupal. We're looking at trying out Kaltura CE but I'm wondering what it actually does and how well ti does it. What are you using Kaltura for? What are your impressions of it?

We have planned a big video editing project and enthusiastically started with Kaltura implementation. A dedicated server was rented and implementation was started. We followed the documentation verbatim but could not get things running. I have installed Kaltura 10+ times, and have done 3 full OS reinstalls. Many others encountered the same problem. A 'critical bug' was reported by one of the users. An extensive thread is available in the forum. However, there has been virtually no response from the Kaltura team and unfortunately nobody in the community was able to get this really fixed. We have a more-or-less workaround but over a month (!!) after reporting, the 'critical bug' is still open. My overall opinion: Kaltura is a very interesting video editing system full of opportunities, but it lacks either a larger development team / support community / more extensive documentation and flexibility for regular users to understand and edit the source code. With any of these, bugs can be fixed sooner and issues resolved within an acceptable timeframe. Currently, implementing this on production level means risking long outage if you encounter something like this.

Ok, that information is extremely valuable. We currently have Flash Media Server set up to stream video and we're able to allow users to upload video to be reencoded, stored, and retrieved/streamed. This is currently working well. It sounds like Kaltura may be interesting to play around with or delve into the code of, but not attractive as an alternative to our already working system. Thank you very much for sharing your experience.

As with every software project, sometimes bugs occur. on occasions things will be fixed quickly, other times it may not be that trivial and might take time.
Thanks for sticking to it!
